Talks with South Koreans in Vienna continues, focuses on unfreezing Iran's assets

Vienna, IRNA - South Korea's deputy foreign minister has gone to the Marriott Hotel to discuss ways to resolve the issue of frozen Iranian assets with the heads of the negotiating teams in talks aimed at lifting sanctions.

Choi Jong Kun met with Iran's top  negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani this morning at Iran's office in Vienna and explained the importance of Seoul-Tehran relations and explained Iran's blocked assets in South Korea.

South Korea owes about 7 billion dollars for the purchase of gas condensate from Iran, which it has refused to pay since 2018 under the pretext of Tehran sanctions. Western media claim that the country needs the permission of the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to repay the debt.

South Korea's deputy foreign minister says the country will try to repay its debt to Iran. He tweeted: Korea and Iran will maintain important historical cooperation and relations with each other.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister also stressed that regardless of the outcome of the talks in Vienna, the South Korean government is obliged to release Iran's blocked funds and unilateral US sanctions cannot justify non-payment of these debts.
